Positive Reading Behaviors

Has book or knows where book is when class begins

Quickly finds a comfortable place to read

Asks not to be disturbed

Seems engrossed in the reading

Seldom asks to leave during reading

Points out words or scenes to friends

Asks for help or has questions about the text

Asks the teacher or others for feedback about the book

Has something to say, either verbally or in writing, in response to book

Asks for other books "like this one"

Behaviors Indicating Reading Help May Be Needed

Having difficulty selecting a book

Moving around a lot in order to find a "comfortable" spot

Checking the clock often

Body language indicates lack of enjoyment of the book

Frequently changing book for a new book

Falls asleep during independent reading

Tries to disrupt others during independent reading

Asks if we have to have independent reading today

Tries to write notes or do other things other than read during reading

Doesn't like to talk about or share the book being read
